2026. 4. 4 sat - 19 sun

[ Gaku Nakazawa Solo Exhibition ]

April 4 (Sat) – April 19 (Sun), 2026

13:00–18:00

Closed on Wednesdays

kankakari is pleased to present its first solo exhibition of woodworker Gaku Nakazawa.

When I first encountered Nakazawa’s work, I was drawn to what might be described as a certain “spatial” sensibility residing within his objects.

Grounded in classical traditions yet not confined to any particular region or era, his woodwork embodies a generous and open presence. The restrained traces of the hand and the simple, warm demeanor of each piece speak quietly. Maintaining a sense of anonymity, and at times guided by the inherent character of distinguished woods, his forms and contours seem to waver ever so slightly. It is within this emerging spatiality that I sense the core of his practice.

Familiar with antiques from various cultures and well-versed in the refined aesthetics of suki-inspired woodcraft, Nakazawa continues to contemplate the relationship between wood and people in the contemporary world, viewing the broader field of craft from a panoramic perspective.

This exhibition will feature approximately 80 carved works, including trays, vessels, and boxes born from this background.

We hope you will enjoy these “small spaces” that hold both function and margin, each open to your own interpretation.
