2024. 6/1 sat ~ 16 sun
13:00-18:00
closed on wednesdays

We are pleased to announce the first sculpture exhibition by Hideo Sawada at kankakari.
The silent presence of sculptures carved from the heartwood of trees - In front of Sawada’s wooden sculptures, I am struck by the impression of a transparent existence devoid of worldly vulgarity. It is intriguing how this presence overlaps with the somewhat otherworldly aura of the artist himself.
Just as old statues of gods and saints, worn smooth over time, or fragmented Buddhist statues lose their original significance and become abstract objects of prayer, transcending specific beliefs to soothe the human heart, Sawada’s works also possess no particular attributes. They simply exist quietly “beside” us, neither too close nor too distant, creating a comfortable sense of space.
After studying sculpture in Japan and Germany, Sawada has long resisted the world of academic sculpture. Yet, he seems to be tenuously connected to the enduring history of sculpture and the cultural landscape of Japan.
The syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, the hidden Virgin Mary inside Buddhist statues - would it be an exaggeration to say that the subtle influences that emerge from the pared-down figures in Sawada’s works evoke the rich forms of faith inherent in Japan and the expansive sense of space that flows from them?
In this exhibition, we will also show large sculptures and stone carvings, a rare opportunity for the artist. We hope you will appreciate the sight of approximately 80 quiet statues.
