4つのプレートが交錯する、世界的にも稀有な地形である伊豆半島。
本州で唯一フィリピン海プレート上に位置するその土地は、火山灰土、赤土、黄土、黒ボク土、粘土質土、石灰岩土など、多様な土壌を抱えることでも知られています。
その土地に暮らす渡辺隆之は、各所に眠る土を掘り、観察し、自生する植物を採取しながら、自然環境との高次の交歓を楽しむように様々な造形物を生み出します。それらは「作品」である以前に、幼い頃の自然界との隔たりのない関係性の延長に生まれた無垢な造形物のように感じられるのです。
やきものを、土、水、木、火によるエネルギー交換の一つと捉える彼は「かたちはエネルギーによって生み出され、その性質そのままに振る舞うのではないか」と話します。
足元に流れる地中のエネルギー、土壌の成り立ち、そして地上に遍く生命。
それらと直に触れ合いながら生まれる不思議な「かたち」の数々は、プレートテクニクスや分子構造という巨視と微視、その両極を喚起させつつ、この世界に確かに存在するもっと捉えどころのない何かを、土や植物を媒介としながら静かに伝えているようです。
今展の中心軸として、長らく待ち望んでいた大きな土の球体を制作してくれていると聞きました。すべての原点である「○（球体）」、そして、そこから派生する小さな「かたち」の数々。彼が日々感じている世界の縮図が、同じく土と木で出来たこの建物の内部で響き合う光景を私達も楽しみにしています。
立体作品から銀彩の「くぼみ」器まで、大きな宇宙観を内包しながら全存在への優しい眼差しを湛える渡辺隆之の作品を、ぜひご高覧頂けましたら幸いです。

Takayuki Watanabe Exhibition

The Izu Peninsula is a globally rare geological formation where four tectonic plates intersect.
As the only region on Honshu located on the Philippine Sea Plate, it is known for its diverse soils, including volcanic ash, red soil, loess, andosol, clay-rich soil, and limestone.
Living in this unique environment, Takayuki Watanabe digs into the land, observing the dormant soil, collecting native plants, and creating various forms as if engaging in a higher dialogue with the natural world. To me, his creations feel less like “artworks” and more like pure expressions born from the seamless connection we share with nature as a child.
Watanabe views ceramics as an exchange of energies involving earth, water, wood, and fire. He remarks, “Forms are generated by energy and behave in accordance with their inherent nature.”
The subterranean energies beneath our feet, the origins of the soil, and the life flourishing above—all of these interact directly with him, giving rise to mysterious “forms.”
These forms evoke both the macro scale of plate tectonics and the micro scale of molecular structures, bridging the extremes and quietly conveying something more elusive yet undeniably present in this world, mediated through soil and plants.
For this exhibition, Watanabe has been creating a large spherical clay form—a work I have long aspired to see.
The sphere, representing the origin of all forms, is accompanied by smaller, derivative shapes. We eagerly anticipate how this microcosm of the world, as experienced by the artist, will resonate within this old Japanese house made of earth and wood.
From sculptural works to silver-glazed “hollow” vessels, Watanabe’s creations embody a profound cosmology while offering a gentle gaze upon all existence. We hope you will take this opportunity to experience the world of Takayuki Watanabe.
