Takayuki Watanabe exhibition 11/6-23

2026.11.6 fri – 23 mon

Takayuki Watanabe
“The Earth Is a Great Piece of Pottery”
6–23 November 2026
13:00–18:00
Closed on Wednesdays
Across the Izu Peninsula, Takayuki Watanabe digs clay from the earth, gathers wild plants, and carves wood found close to home.
His practice begins with an intimate engagement with the land where he lives and the forces that have shaped it.
The Izu Peninsula is the only part of Honshu situated on the Philippine Sea Plate, a region known for its diverse geology.
Its earth, plants, and water interact through the hands of one individual, transforming into various forms.
Rather than simply an act of making, this process seems to be a phenomenon in which the forces and subtle presences that surround us begin to stir, gradually gather density, and eventually emerge as form.
Watanabe finds the fundamental workings of life in the interactions and cycles that arise as these forms encounter and affect the world around them.
This exhibition brings together forms born from the diverse soils of Izu, alongside works made from plants and wood.
“The Earth Is a Great Piece of Pottery” is a phrase Watanabe heard from his mentor during his university years, and one that continues to resonate at the heart of his practice.
We hope this exhibition offers an opportunity to encounter Watanabe’s work within this broader perspective.
