今年は矢野さんのもとに、九州各地から様々な原木が8トン近くも届いたという。

中には直径1m近い大木もあるとのこと。樹齢にしたら200年ほどになるだろうか。

今展に向けての約半年間、それらの木を眺めながら自然と浮かび上がるかたちを一つ一つ

彫り進めていったと伺った。「木」との対話に時間を注ぎ、力みが解けた制作の日々から

晴れやかな声が聞こえてきた。

矢野さんの作るものは、器 / 家具 / 彫刻 — その狭間を行き来するような固有の在り方で、

空間の傍らにいつも静かに佇んでいる。

器も、箱も、椅子も、木の塊も、植物の彫刻も、ただ素のままに存在しているように見えて、

使い手の見立てによって生かされる余白がたっぷりと残されている。

「道具」であることの豊かさを許容しながら、それ以上に、深部に響く何かが彫り込まれた作品、

それは、木工の原点へと回帰しながら、人との深いつながりを結ぶ存在であるように思う。

木を単なる素材としてではなく、その根源に向き合うことで立ち上がる「余白の質」。

本展では、矢野作品のそうした在りようにあらためて着目してみたい。

木と人のあいだに生まれる豊かな時間をお楽しみいただけますと幸いです。

“From the Log”

This year, nearly eight tons of raw logs from across Kyushu arrived at Yano’s workshop—among them, trunks nearly one meter in diameter, estimated to be around 200 years old.

Over the past six months, in preparation for this exhibition, Yano spent his days carving each form as it naturally emerged from the wood—quietly observing, and letting the shapes reveal themselves.

I hear a clear and unburdened voice resonating from those days of deep dialogue with the wood.

Yano’s creations—vessels, furniture, sculpture—occupy a space that slips between definitions. Always quietly present, they sit beside us in the space.

Bowls, boxes, chairs, blocks of wood, and carved plants—they may appear unadorned, yet they leave ample room for the viewer’s interpretation and engagement.

These are works that embrace the richness of being tools, while also carrying something deeper, something that resonates at the core.

Returning to the roots of woodworking, they seem to form profound connections with those who encounter them.

Not merely treating wood as material, but engaging with its essence—this brings forth a quality of openness in Yano’s work.

Through this exhibition, we hope to explore that presence anew.
